Problem of the Day 108


Bavisella

A big congrats for all our runners yesterday. In particular, we want to congratulate Lorenzo (1st), Leo M. (2nd) and Sarah (3rd) for their great performances!

In Math today we reviewed for our test on next Tuesday and we reviewed our nonfiction unit in Reading. Next week we will begin not only our last chapter in Math but also our last unit in Reading (the Socratic circle).

THE WRITING WORKSHOP

We just finished our unit on Informational Essays. The Grade 5 writers chose to write on the topics of "Obesity," "Anorexia" and "Food Allergies." The final essays were due on Monday. They will be presented next week.
This week we also began a new writing unit on Opinion Essays. We have been discussing several topics such as "Should kids be allowed to get tattoos and piercings?" , "Should students be allowed to have cell phones in class?" and  " Should students get paid for getting good grades ?"
I am looking forward to these class discussions and to reading their ideas.

Problem of the Day 107


Nervous System

In Math we already finished our chapter 14 on 3D solids by looking at cylinders, spheres and cones.

In Reading we talked about how history often repeats itself. So, when we are reading a non-fiction book about history we should see if anything can be compared to another time period or even what is happening today in the news.

In Science we talked about both the excretory system as well as the nervous system. Here is the prezi:

Problem of the Day 106


3D figures

In Math this morning we began chapter 14 about 3D figures. We learned to identify faces, bases, edges, and vertices. We specifically looked at two types of figures that are named after their bases: prisms and pyramids.



In Reading we talked about how to have a personal reaction to what we read in nonfiction texts.

In Art we worked on our Science projects.

50th Celebration is right around the corner...

In Math today we reviewed the last few chapters on probability and geometry. We just have 2 chapters left!! We will begin chapter 14 on 3-d figures on Monday.

Tomorrow everybody needs to be at the theater at 4:45.

We had our dress rehearsal this morning for our 50th anniversary show. Things look great!

We also finished our cumulative review. Tomorrow we will correct our work.

This afternoon we had a Introduction to Spanish lesson. Everybody seemed very pleased about it.

Immune System

In Reading we talked about how to read non-fiction from different perspectives. It is important as we formulate our own ideas that we see things from different points of view.

In Math we began our cumulative review. We will be working on it for the next few days.

News Update

Here is a brief news update:

  • We finished our chapter 13 test today. We should have results out on Wednesday.
  • Friday we need to be at the theater at 5:00 for rehearsal and the show starts at 6:30.
  • Next Tuesday we have the Young Marathon- Bavisela. 
  • Our field trip to Forni di Sopra is May 20th to 22nd.
  • We are working on our final Science projects about the human body systems. We will have more information later about the Science Fair.

Math Test on Monday

We will have our Math test on Monday over Chapter 13 (Triangles and Quadrilaterals). We are reviewing our polygon rules now to find missing angles. Make sure you try the problem of the day!

In Reading we talked about the importance of visual tools (charts, webs, timelines...) to help us to identify essential questions.

In Band we worked on the song "Thinking Out Loud".

In Tech we worked on making a commercial with video editing.

In Math today we looked at quadrilaterals. Here are some of our notes:

Stats Presentations

Great job everybody with our Stats presentations today! I was very impressed.

In Math we continued to look at triangles, specifically the fact that the sum of 2 sides are always more than the third side.


Tomorrow we move into a look at quadrilaterals.

We talked about how to ask good questions about our topic in Reading today. Asking why, where, when, what and how can be a good way to focalize our curiosity.

In Math we presented our Stats research projects....great job everybody!

Isosceles and Right Triangles

We learned in Math today that isosceles and right triangles are special when trying to find missing angles.

In Reading we talked about how we need to keep our essential questions in our mind as we read. We also saw Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a Dream" speech.

Angles of a Triangle

We again worked on our reading groups for Reading.

In Math we constructed a triangle, cut it up, and then placed the angles to see that the 3 angles form a straight line of 180°.

In Technology we worked with a new software to edit videos. In Band we worked on a new song.
