Comparing characters
In Reading we started off the day talking about how to compare characters to find meaning. We can specifically look at their backgrounds, relationships, pressure, perspectives and how they respond to trouble. Can you compare two characters?
In Math we had some make up tests and a review packet for our test on Tuesday. We finished our chapter 10 on percents. Next Tuesday again is the test on chapter 10 and on Friday we will have a review assessment.

Problem of the Day 76
Of the 150 goldfish that Joanna bought, 60% were females and the rest were males. When some female goldfish died, the percent of female goldfish became 52%. How many male goldfish were there? How many female goldfish died?
Upside Down
In Reading this morning we talked about some practical ways to keep track of books that we have read, writing down summaries or notes, in order to compare them to other books. We then looked at how to use a Venn Diagram to compare two books looking at setting, themes, conflict, characters or other.
In Math we talked about some different methods to take the percent of another number. We can change the percents to simple fractions and multiply when easy or change them to decimals and multiply when more complicated.
In Tech we continued to work on our Scratch games. There are some great projects!
In Band we practiced "In the Jungle" and then learned "Upside Down" by Jack Johnson. Take a look at the original.

In the eco-garden of a school, the number of aquatic animals is 80% of the number of aquatic plants. There are 162 aquatic plants and animals in all. How many aquatic animal are there in the eco-garden?
Don't be cilia, the Science test is done!
In Reading this morning we talked about how to compare books with different settings to find meaning. How characters deal with different settings can bring out themes in a book. are the struggles interior, exterior, both?
In Math we continued our chapter on Percents by converting a variety of fractions to percents. The secret is to convert the fraction to a number with the denominator of 100.
In Science we took our Trimester 2 test on the classification of life. I saw a lot of studying! We will see if the results demonstrate the hard work. Our projects/oral interrogations are next week so keep studying!

Per venerdì 27 febbraio scrivere il tema sulla descrizione dell'alieno.
Problem of the Day 74
Ms. Li bought some crackers. She gave 30% of the crackers to her neighbor and ate 50% of the remaining crackers. Ms. Li had 42 crackers left. How many crackers did Ms. Li buy?
Percent
In Math we started our new chapter (10) about percent. Today we had a basic introduction and realized that percent is another form of having a part of a whole, specifically when the whole is 100. Therefore we saw that there is a tight relationship between fractions, ratios, decimals and percents.
In Reading we talked about how we can find many themes in on story. Still some will be main themes while others will be minor.
In Art we worked on our Science projects and prepared for our test tomorrow on the classification of life.

Math Test Tomorrow and Science Test and Projects coming up
We reviewed for our Math test tomorrow on chapter 9. We have been practicing the multiplication and division of decimals. Tomorrow we will see if we are capable of applying those skills to story problems. We move on to percents next week.
In Reading we continued our study of the interpretation of texts by looking at character's critical choices and strong emotions to find meaning. It is at these moments that we often can identify themes in our stories.
We also have our Trimester 2 Science test on Tuesday over the classification of life. The projects and oral interrogations will be the week after on March 3rd.

Back from the break...
We came back to talk about how to estimate the four operations by rounding decimals to the nearest whole number or nearest tenth. This can save us some time and help us to check our work.
We also had our auditions for IST's Got Talent for our Carnevale party tomorrow afternoon.

Problem of the Day 73
The total mass of 4 cartons of milk and 7 bottles of apple juice is 2.38 kg. The total mass of 2 cartons of milk and 3 bottles of apple juice is 1.1 kg. Find the mass of a carton of milk. Give your answer in kg.
Dividing by 10, 100, 100 or multiples of 10, 100 or 1000
In Reading we looked briefly, before Grade 5 made some Nutella treats, at the three Newbery Award Winners. The Newbery and Newbery Honors are given to outstanding books in American chuldren's literature. This years winner and two honors went to :
In Math we talked about how to divide by 10, 100 and 1000 or multiples of 10, 100, and 1000.

HOLIDAY REMINDER
We postponed the History test again! It will be on Monday Feb 16 and will include Chapters 2.1 2.2 and 2.3 in our book Medieval Realms.
We also have a spelling test on Monday on all 36 of the MUST KNOW irregular verbs.
Please make sure that your fantasy stories have been typed too.
On Monday Feb 16 we will also begin a new Writing Workshop on POETRY.
Have a nice week off !
NUTELLA BREAD
Today's Social Studies/Math activity had four objectives.
1. To work as a team
2. Follow instructions
3. Review fractions
4. Share equally
The class was divided into two teams and each team received a piece of dough and some nutella.
Instructions were posted and the work began. The end result was a star shaped desert called "Nutella Bread"

Problem of the Day 72
The total capacity of 1 carton is the same as the total capacity of 2 identical cups. If 1.8 liters of water are needed to fill up 3 identical cups and 2 identical cartons, what is the capacity of a cup? Express your answer correct to 2 decimal places.
Dividing Decimals
In Math this morning we had two guests who will be attending IST next year. We looked specifically this morning at dividing and decimals. The two main ideas are to put a decimal above the decimal in the dividend (if the divisor has a decimal, you need to multiply both the divisor and dividend by 10, 100, 1000...move the decimals...until you are dividing by a whole number). Then you need to divide normally and add 0's at the end of the dividend if needed. You might need to add 0's until the quotient terminates, until you see a repeating number, or if you need to round.
In Reading, we had a few make up tests and the rest worked on their writing projects.

Problem of the Day 71
Charles and his 5 siblings buy a present for their mother on Mother's Day. As the eldest brother, Charles pays 0.2 of the cost of the present. the rest of hos siblings pay the balance equally. Each sibling pays €9.50 less than Charles. What is the cost of the present?
Testing Day 2
Great job everybody on our ISA testing. We will get back into the swing of normal life tomorrow as we tackle division of decimals.
In Technology we continued to work on our "game" projects.
In Band we practiced all the chords and even played a few "new" songs...like "Yellow Submarine".

HISTORY TEST Postponed and more!
With so many students missing, I once again postponed the quiz. I am waiting for most of the students to return to continue with the Social Studies program.
We are finishing up our Fantasy stories and will begin a new unit of the Writing Workshop on Poetry as soon as we have enough students.
In the past two weeks I have given the fifth grade a list of 36 " must know" irregular past tense verbs. We had test on the first 18 last week and if we have most of the students we will have the second half this Friday. This test can be easily made up upon a students return.
ISA tests tomorrow
We will have our ISA test tomorrow and on Wednesday. They will take place only in the mornings; Math and Writing tomorrow and Reading and Writing on Wednesday.
In Math today we worked on multiplying by 10,100, and 1,000. Though this is quite easy we can extend this by decomposing a number to make mental math easier. For example 1.2 x 40 is (1.2 x 4) x 10. or 4.8 x 10 or 48.
Multiplying a decimal by a power of 10: You will notice in this word problem that moving the decimal to the right the same number of times as the number of zeros you multiplying by gets you the answer you desire. Check this out!
In Reading we talked about test taking strategies.
In Art we almost finished our setting projects.
